SA Musicians Who Are One Hit Wonders

The definition of a one-hit wonder differs across geographies, and across genres. This list could include actors, sports stars and musicians. But we’ll concentrate on musicians.Although many one-hit wonders quickly fade into obscurity, a few of them are household names. Some (like … ) are well known because of their sole song, but others have such broad careers that few of us remember that they had just one real hit.

Mgarimbe “Sista Bethina”

No one was ever ready for the storm that was to come when Mgarimbe and Jabu first released this track. This is arguably one of the biggest songs to come out of the country in the past decade. The Party Goers Anonymous’ official anthem is still a guaranteed crowd rouser. Mgarimbe released an album titled Grand Entrance in 2011, however, nothing much came out of it.

Tyte “Tinzadaba”

Lead singer of the girl group Tyte, Kedebone Mkhabela broke into the scene as an SABC 1 continuity presenter and later became part of the music group called Tyte. Well, the girls gave us Tinzdaba and never came back with another hit. Kedebone is currently a radio host/producer on Rise FM.

DJ Ganyani ft FB – Xigubu

Fiesta Black has been in and out of studios for the past 10 years. In her earlier years she recorded rap and developed into a fully-fledged vocalist that can sing, chant and rap. Growing up she was part of a crew and used to get together with her friends to records tons and tons of songs. Hitting the studio was their favorite pastime.

Ghetto Lingo “Pump It Up”

One particular group that caused a bit of a rift within South African pop culture was the all-male kwaito group, Ghetto Lingo, who won the second season of Coca-Cola Popstars, and, ironically enough, didn’t reap much success in comparison to their counterparts Jamali, who managed to give us two full albums.

101 – “Who’s It Gonna Be?”

This is the first group that won the competition. The only person I remember from the group is Pam Andrews, and she is the only one who has made something of the break she was given(hell, I heard she’s engaged to Paul Viv, is she?). Who were the other members of the group, better yet, where are they?

Adilah – “Se sfikile”

Third group to win, personally I thought they would get far, but alas, they have also disappeared from the music scene. Thembisile seems to be the one who’s milking the opportunity she was given. I guess out of all the four, she was the only one who really wanted it. The others were just there for?
