Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters has announced that South African high schools will soon have driving schools as part of their curriculum. This initiative is set to be part of a long-term effort to improve road safety as a whole in the country. According to Peters, the provision of a driving simulators programme will be implemented during the 2017/2018 financial year
The minister also said that they have partnered with the Department of Basic Education to ensure the inclusion of road safety in the curriculum and the training of teachers. “This essentially entails different aspects of road safety awareness which are intended to adequately skill new drivers” said Minister Dipuo Peters
She however emphasised the fact that formal education will remain important. She also went on to say that it is very important to broaden our minds and find ways to include road safety messages into wider curriculum, and also into Mathematics and science. The Graduated Driving License framework is still in the process to be finalised.
