The world has lost yet another one of Mzansi’s greatest talents. Koyo Bala was more than just a bubbly musician. He was humble human being, caring, had a beautiful heart and was passionate about life. Mzansi lost Koyo Bala yesterday, March 7 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town after a long battle of cancer. While Koyo was seen as a bubbly socialite and musician, there are many things the public didn’t know about him.

1. The 36-year-old singer was part of pop gay trio 3Sum – a pop band comprised of Bala‚ Amstel Maboa and the deceased Jeff Moyo
2. Koyo was known in the entertainment industry as activists for gay rights.
3. In 2011, Bala spoke openly about living with HIV. He said he had received the diagnosis in 2010 and had made a commitment to help others in the same situation.
4. Koyo worked as an HIV/Aids volunteer and part of his responsibility was being tested on an annual basis.
5. In 2014 he was diagnosed with anal cancer and decided to move back home last year where he started chemotherapy
6. He is from Cape Town, Egugulethu . Koyo initially came to Johannesburg to study. That’s when he met Amstel.
7. He was not only a musician, Koyo was a stylist, he also did a lot of motivational talks and mc gigs.
8. He was best friends with Lerato Kganyago and they spent mos of their time together.
