Position Summary

SPAR is offering a Finance Trainee role in Cape Town, providing hands-on experience in finance and accounting within a high-volume retail environment. This permanent position allows candidates to gain practical exposure to operational and reporting aspects of finance, including supplier reconciliations, payment processing, record keeping, and financial reporting.

Job Description

Financial Administration

• Assist in reconciling creditors’ ledgers to supplier statements
• Support the preparation of payment schedules and submission for payment runs
• Help with weekly and monthly supplier payment processes
• Learn to process purchase orders, journals, claims, and invoices accurately
• Gain exposure to forecasting payment schedules

Process Control & Query Resolution

• Assist in following up on outstanding documents and supplier queries
• Support reconciliation of statements, remittances, and credit notes
• Learn to handle and resolve payment-related queries under guidance
• Observe and assist in warehouse and supplier escalation procedures

Record Keeping & Documentation

• Maintain and update finance document filing systems (electronic and manual)
• Ensure all supporting documents are accurately matched and stored
• Assist in compiling and distributing finance reports

Reporting & Month-End Activities

• Support daily payment balancing tasks
• Learn to generate and interpret standard finance reports
• Assist with preparation of expense analysis reports
• Support month-end journal preparation to ensure trial balance completeness in Trade Debtors, Trade Creditors, General Finance, and Payroll

Professional Development

• Participate in training sessions and complete assigned learning modules
• Support DC project initiatives
• Observe and learn from disciplinary, performance review, and team meeting processes
• Receive coaching and guidance from the Accounts Payable Controller

Minimum Requirements

Qualification

• Matric Certificate (essential)
• Finance-related qualification or currently studying towards one
