12 SA Universities Listed on “Africa’s Top 30 Universities” List

This Africa university rankings indicate that South Africa’s university system is the strongest on the continent: it is home to five of the six highest ranked African universities, including the two campuses consistently ranked as academically strongest in Africa. The University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand.

Here are the 12 South African universities which are listed on Africa’s Top 30 Universities List…….

1. University Of Cape Town (Africa Ranking: 1)

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university located in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. UCT was founded in 1829 as the South African College, and is the oldest university in South Africa and the second oldest extant university in Africa.

2. University Of Witswatersrand (Africa Ranking: 2)

The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is a multi-campus South African public research university situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. It is more commonly known as Wits University.

3. University Of Stellenbosch (Africa Ranking: 4)

Stellenbosch University is a leading public research university situated in the town of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Other nearby universities are the University of Cape Town and University of the Western Cape.

4. University Of KwaZulu-Natal (Africa Ranking: 5)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal or UKZN is a university with five campuses all located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It was formed on 1 January 2004 after the merger between the University of Natal and the University of Durban Westvelle.

The University of Johannesburg is a public university located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The University of Johannesburg came into existence on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the Rand Afrikaana University (RAU), the Technikon Witswatersrand (TWR) and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University. Prior to the merger, the Daveyton  and Soweto campuses of the former Vista University had been incorporated into RAU.

The University of Pretoria is a multi campus public research university in Pretoria, the administrative and de facto capital of South Africa. The university was established in 1908 as the Pretoria campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College and is the fourth South African institution in continuous operation to be awarded university status.

8. University Of South Africa (Africa Ranking: 13)

The University of South Africa is the largest university on the African continent and attracts a third of all higher education students in South Africa. The university has a student headcount of over 300,000 students, including African and international students in 130 countries worldwide, making it one of the world’s mega universities .

9. Rhodes University (Africa Ranking: 17)

Rhodes University is a public research university located in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is one of four universities in the province. Established in 1904, Rhodes University is the province’s oldest university, and it is the fifth or sixth oldest South African university in continuous operation, being preceded by the University of the Free State  (1904), University of Witwatersrand (1896).
