“I Don’t Take Pics With Men Who Straighten Their Hair”- Says Hugh Masekela
Hugh Masekela, spoke out too many times about his dislike of women wearing weaves. And the African music legend still stays firm on weave policy. He even went on and issued a strong statement where he explained why he continues to refuse taking pictures with women who have weaves or artificial hair, and asked that he not be forced into it. Bra Hugh wrote: “If you are wearing a weave, don’t be surprised if I refuse to be photographed with you. I will not be part of betraying our African heritage.”
He is reported to have asked for extra security at a show in Durban to “shield him from weave-decorated women”. Hugh says it is “painful” to sit back and watch high profile women happily wear weaves when it goes against their traditions. “It’s not that I dislike weaves, it’s just that I come from an era where people who introduced themselves looked like themselves,” Masekela said.
“We spend about a billion rand on other people’s hair each year. I don’t even know where to begin on this issue.” He also added.
Masekela also pointed out that this has nothing to do with gender when he expressed his dislike for men who straighten their hair saying, “I don’t take pictures with men who straighten their hair either… It’s got nothing to do with gender.”
Alright Bra Hugh, we get you!
