Facebook Users Not Happy About The Facebook “Fat” Emoji
One minute Facebook is revealing an app that helps people identify people who might be suicidal and the next they are adding a “feeling fat” emoji. Forgive us if we are missing something here but isn’t weight issues one of the biggest reason behind online bullying which pushes people to want to commit suicide?
Over 16,000 people have signed an online petition which calls for the “feeling fat” emoji to be eliminated from Facebook’s emoji list that can be featured in status update. The petition appears on charge.org and was set up by Catherine Weingarten and the group Endangered Bodies.
Endangered Bodies says on its website that, “Our aim is to save future generations from the misery that turns people against their own bodies.
“When Facebook users set their status to “feeling fat”, they are making fun of people who consider themselves to be overweight which can include many people with eating disorder.” Weingarten said. “I think we all need to be a little more careful about how we talk about their bodies and learn how to use a more body positive vocabulary”, she said.
Catherine posted a photo written “fat is not a feeling” on her page. The “feeling fat” emojiĀ was not included in the list on Facebook since this morning.
