These will be known as the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. 2. Ruth First Master Scholarship at University of Durham in UK, 2015
Ruth First Educational Trust is offering scholarship for southern African students for the academic year 2015-2016. Scholarship support student taking a one-year taught course leading to the award of a Master’s degree at Durham University. Student should hold a relevant honours degree of sufficient standard to be admitted to their chosen Master’s course. Scholarship covers the full fees for the programme chosen and the Scholar will receive a monthly allowance to cover living and other expenses for 12 months, as well as free accommodation and meals at St Chad’s College .The application deadline is 1st March 2015.

-hold a relevant honours degree of sufficient standard to be admitted to your chosen Master’s course (further conditions apply to the MBA programme), and
-not hold a Master’s degree, nor have previously studied at a university outside southern Africa, and
-show evidence of active involvement in and commitment to voluntary work for the benefit of causes such as rural or urban community development; young people or educational projects; charitable organizations; health or AIDS awareness projects; student welfare or guidance. If you have a paid job that involves working in such areas, you should show evidence of leadership and commitment beyond the requirements of the job.
-English language requirements for international students coming to study in the UK were tightened in 2011. The person selected for the Ruth First Scholarship will need to provide evidence of possessing a qualification in English language that meets the minimum requirement for the programme applied for. The general minimum set by the UK Government is Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Requirements for particular programmes at Durham are listed here. If you already have a suitable qualification (such as Cambridge English, IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson Test of Academic English), send a scan of the certificate with your application. Scholarship Description: The Durham University South African Scholarship Fund was set up in 1964-65 by students and staff of the University of Durham. Funds were raised in order to “bring to Durham one of the many South African young men and women who are fully qualified to benefit from a higher education but who are denied it for purely racial reasons”, and over the next three decades a dozen students from disadvantaged backgrounds in southern Africa successfully took Bachelor’s degrees at Durham. After the death of Ruth First in 1982, the Fund was renamed in her honour. Many of the students supported by the Ruth First Memorial Studentship Fund came to Durham from exile and could only return to South Africa after the end of apartheid.

What does it cover? The University, with the agreement of the Department concerned, will award a tuition fee scholarship covering the full fees for the programme chosen. Through a Gift Agreement between the Trust and the University, the Scholar will receive a monthly allowance to cover living and other expenses for 12 months, as well as free accommodation and meals at St Chad’s College (the cost of which is shared between the Trust and the College). In 2014-15 the allowance is £500 per month and the value of the full-board accommodation is approximately £465 per month. The Scholar will also receive a settling-in allowance on arrival and a contribution to the cost of sending belongings home before departure if necessary. The Trust will pay for one return air ticket from the home country to the UK and the cost of return travel between the UK airport and Durham City. The Trust cannot provide additional support for dependants, nor for travel during the period of the Scholarship. The Scholar is required to attend all taught components of the chosen course and complete all assignments prescribed, including a dissertation. The normal starting date for most Masters programmes is the beginning of October.

Scholarship Description: The joint International Master in Rural Development (IMRD), part of the European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus JMD programme, offers the opportunity to become an international expert on rural development in its diversity of approaches and applications, on a scholarship provided by the European Union. The IMRD master course programme, is a high level academic programme aimed at training top students from all over the world into specialists in integrated rural development, focussed on socio-economic and institutional aspects; not only from the European Union but also from developed, developing and transition countries outside the EU. The IMRD master course programme is a 2 year master programme (120 ECTS) jointly organised by 16 worldwide leading universities in rural development and agricultural economics. The methodology consists of a combination of basic and specialised training in technical, economic and social sciences, a case study of one month, an individual master thesis and a high extent of student and scholar mobility.

Selection Criteria: The selection of awardees of these scholarships, is conducted by the IMRD Management Board. They take their decision carefully after assessing all complete application files of the academically admitted candidates for the IMRD programme who applied correctly and timely for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarships. EMJDM Student Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Notwithstanding, the Selection and Award Committee takes the following 3 points into consideration:
-a fair gender balance amongst the Scholarship awardees
-a fair geographical balance (ideally max. 2 scholarships per nationality)
-the choice for the Thesis Partner University in order for a fair balance amongst consortium partners (max. 1 EMJMD scholarship per TP university per intake)

By submitting his/her application the applicant must be aware not only of the eligibility criteria but also of the tasks that the mobility will demand. In order to be eligible for a PAMAPS scholarship, the academic and administrative staff applying to a mobility scholarship must:
-Be a national of one of one of the AFRICAN countries of the PAMAPS partners institution;
-Have sufficient knowledge of the language of the courses or of one of the official languages currently spoken in the hosting countries;
-Work for full time in a PAMAPS partner University;
-Base the mobility activities on the partnership agreements and the sustainability strategy defined by the members of PAMAPS partnership;
-Agree with the home and host universities on the programme of activities, namely: lectures or administrative work to be delivered by the visiting staff; the research activities to be carried out; the type of training to be followed; etc.

Scholarship Description: The PAMAPS Project is a mobility programme in the area of postgraduate medical academic specialities. The project is designed to facilitate movement of Masters Students, PhD students and Staff between selected partner Universities in four regions of Africa (West, Central, East and South). The project will focus on postgraduate medical education and research as a means of capacity development by making available a variety of postgraduate degrees and research opportunities to students in the field of medical sciences. These Students and Staff mobility activities have the potential to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the participating Universities towards the overall aim of encouraging ‘brain gain’ rather than ‘brain drain’ in Africa. 5. EUSA ID Scholarships in Development Studies for South African and European Students, 2015
Applications are invited for the 2nd call of Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Project EUSA ID scholarships in Development Studies. EUSA_ID is a mobility programme offering study, training and research periods in Europe for South African Master and PhD candidates and staff and provides European PhD candidates the opportunity to spend a research period in South Africa. The EUSA_ID partnership will award 66 grants in total to support South African mobility to a European partner university at Master, PhD and staff level. A total of 18 grants will be awarded to support European mobility to a South African partner university. Scholarship Description: EUSA_ID is a mobility programme offering study, training and research periods in Europe for South African Master and PhD candidates and staff and provides European PhD candidates the opportunity to spend a research period in South Africa. The second call for applications is now open until 28 February 2015. For non-degree seeking mobilities for the MADM at Ruhr University Bochum the application deadline is already 31 January 2015 as the mobility starts in April 2015. South African Master and PhD candidates and staff are invited to apply for a mobility period at one of the European EUSA_ID partner universities while European PhD candidates are invited to apply for a mobility period at one of the South African partner universities.
