Top 10 Things Every South African Is Familiar With
There are quite a few things that are unique to South Africa and that the world isn’t exposed to on a day to day basis. There are certain things we see everyday that are not out of the ordinary for locals but may be a shocker to visitors. Below you will find our list of Top 10 Things Every South African Is Familiar With but will shock quite a few people.
10. Taxi’s
If you live and travel in South Africa on a day to day and say you don’t see a taxi where you’re traveling, you’re lying mate. Though many don’t understand the concept of 16 people, strangers that is, being in one car to go somewhere seems bizarre. It’s not unusual and it makes life so much cheaper for a lot of us.
9. Queue
Queues something we’re all used to and just being chilled with it. Like it’s not a shocker to walk into a bank and the line seems like one you’re going to stand in for the next hour or so. We all just stand there until its your turn.
8. Robot Beggars
Almost every robot has them, and some of us sitting there thinking, “don’t you get a social grant or something?” or we ask ourselves why don’t you get yourself a job somewhere? But even though you’re sitting there complaining, they probably have made more money than you have while waiting for that robot to open?
7. Traffic Officer Bribes aka Cold drink money
Corruption is a norm, not saying it’s acceptable though but it’s a part of us. We joke about and get angry about it but most days it’s not new when a Metro asks for cold drink money to let you go after driving past those 10 cars via the yellow lane.
6. Rude Tellers
You greet them with a smile and because Mrs Smith just upset them before you stepped up, they’re going to treat you like the most difficult customer they’ve had all year. Everyone complains about a rude teller everyday, like if you don’t enjoy working with people then please don’t become a teller, please? Thank you!
5. Hawkers
They sell you the things you don’t need and the things you do need but only last a few days. Hawkers are like the most convenient people ever ( for air time of course), we only hate them because we love them so much. But ijob ijob sbal’ , a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
4. Road Rage
Slow day, slow weather, slow minds and slow drivers. The environment tends to influence how drivers drive and traffic is only traffic not because there’s a real problem up front but because someone somewhere is thinking slowly. If you’re not a part of the road rage you’re a witness to it really, nothing new here people move along.
3. Shacks
We probably have as many house as we do shacks, haha. I’m kidding, shacks are a norm though, not saying it’s acceptable to have people living in shacks though but it shows how creative South Africans are, you have a choice not to be homeless really build yourself a shack until you’re on your feet again homie.
2. A Friendly Face
From that anger you experienced during that road rage to a random greeting you as soon as you walk into the office, that’s what makes South Africa such a great place and country to be a part of.
1. Corner Job Seekers
Whether its at your local grocery store or at the building supplies stores, you always find a group of people just looking to put some food on the table for the night. Experience gives one skills, the more you do the greater your chances of perfecting those skills. Give these guys a chance the next time you come across them.
