Reasons Why You Should Vote
Today is the day and South Africans are heading to their voting stations as we speaking to be part of the movement. Voting has been one of the most discussed topics in daily conversations because where politics is the topic of discussion. The views around the topic however are twofold, while others live for elections, some couldn’t care less. This list however focuses on the positive side of the matter and gives you reasons why you should vote. Why you should vote? Read the following points to know why it’s important for you to vote:
1.It is your right
The right to vote is a fundamental democratic right that is protected by the Constitution of South Africa. We are often quick to shout “It’s my Democratic right!!!” when the manger at the local store treats us unfairly but we neglect our right to vote.
2. You get to choose who you want in power
When we vote, we choose the representatives who will make the laws and policies that govern how we live together. It might not happen overnight but placing your vote is the first step to making sure that people in leadership do what’s right on their part.
3. Voting is your voice
While democracy involves much more than holding elections every five years, voting is a powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. The more votes, the more powerful the message is. In other words, every vote counts.
4. If you don’t vote you can’t complain
If you don’t exercise the right to vote, you’ll be a hypocrite when you complain about politics. It’s that simple. Why complain when you did nothing towards the solution of your complaint??
5. Taking responsibility for your country
When guys turn 18, you are considered and adult and with adulthood comes responsibilities. Sadly we don’t always get to choose our responsibilities; they just come with age and time. So act responsibly and take responsibility for your country.
6. Vote for your future
If you choose to do nothing about the state of your country today, what makes you think that it will improve in the next 20 years when you failed to do something about it back then?? Although it might sound farfetched, but is the country you live in today good enough for your children? Don’t you want to live to tell them how you contributed towards the change they see today??
7. Ignorance is not bliss
If you are not happy with the current situation of country and how it’s being governed, not voting simply tells them that you are okay with it. This is where the term silence means consent comes into play. By not voting you are nodding your head while your mind says no, and you know you’re smarter than that.
8. To inspire change
It all starts with you. Be the change you want to see in the world. Or in this case, be the change you want to see in your country, your province and your community. Vote for what you want.
9. You vote for TV Shows
When Khaya Mthethwa was the first black South African to win idols season 8, kit was because people voted to make a change. Why is it so much easier to spend your airtime on TV shows voting for a winner but you won’t go and vote in our democratic elections for free?
