Casual Merchandiser Opportunity at Dis-Chem Langenhoven Park

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a Casual Merchandiser to join its Langenhoven Park store in Bloemfontein, Free State. This part-time retail opportunity is suitable for an entry-level candidate who enjoys working with customers and takes pride in keeping products well presented and readily available. The successful candidate will support daily merchandising activities, stock rotation, housekeeping and customer service while helping the store maintain Dis-Chem’s required retail standards. Job Overview and Responsibilities
The Casual Merchandiser will be responsible for maintaining effective product presentation and ensuring that customers can easily find the products they need. The role combines merchandising, stock handling and customer service duties, making accuracy, reliability and attention to detail important qualities for the position.
Key responsibilities include:
- Restock merchandise when required to support maximum sales.
- Ensure delivered stock and stock removed from the storeroom are stored and packed in the correct locations and within the required timeframes.
- Check shelves regularly to ensure products have not passed their sell-by dates.
- Ensure the full product range is available on shelves wherever possible.
- Rotate stock regularly according to the FIFO principle.
- Report low stock, out-of-stock products, damaged merchandise and expired stock to management.
- Assist with stock file counts and general stocktaking activities.
- Follow Dis-Chem operating standards, store layouts and planograms.
- Flatten boxes after unpacking stock and place them in the designated area.
- Ensure front shop shelves and products are neat, visible and correctly presented.
- Check that product labels and prices are accurate.
- Report price discrepancies to management.
- Keep up to date with current and new products.
- Build, face up, replenish and maintain merchandising displays.
- Maintain the physical appearance of the store and merchandise displays.
- Take responsibility for designated stock in both the storeroom and shop floor.
- Assist with loading and off-loading stock when required.
- Ensure products without barcodes are clearly marked.
- Assist with back shopping duties.
- Support the training of new staff members.
- Provide friendly, helpful and courteous assistance to customers.
- Follow up on customer out-of-stock requests using the appropriate customer service list.
- Resolve customer stock queries or refer them to management where necessary.
- Wear the correct uniform and name badge at all times.
- Handle merchandise carefully to minimise stock losses.
- Follow Dis-Chem policies, procedures and standard operating procedures.
- Comply with health and safety requirements.
Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates applying for the Casual Merchandiser position should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Grade 12 or Matric.
- Up to six months of retail experience.
- Computer literacy, including basic MS Office knowledge.
- Willingness and ability to work retail hours.
- At least one year of retail experience would be advantageous.
The position is suited to someone who can work accurately in a busy retail environment. Previous experience in merchandising or FMCG can provide an advantage, but entry-level candidates who meet the essential requirements can also be considered.
Skills and Competencies
The successful candidate should have a strong command of English and communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and management. A professional and presentable appearance is important because the role involves regular interaction with customers. Candidates should also be trustworthy, honest and able to manage their time effectively.
Additional skills that would be advantageous include bilingual communication, knowledge of merchandising standards and an understanding of the FMCG industry. Product and category knowledge can also help candidates perform the role effectively. Experience using ZMORE reports for ordering and stocktaking would be beneficial, as would the ability to identify and report suspicious behaviour involving staff or customers.
Special Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be willing and able to work retail hours, including schedules determined by store requirements. The role requires physical activity, including lifting and moving boxes, so candidates must be physically fit and able to perform these duties while following health and safety procedures. Applicants should have reliable transport or live within reasonable proximity of the Langenhoven Park store.
