Gayton McKenzie Sets the Record Straight On How He Assisted Nandi Nyembe and Other Struggling Artists. This past Thursday, family, friends, industry peers and fans joined mourners at The Market Theatre to celebrate the life of Nandi Nyembe. The veteran actress passed on Saturday at the age if 75, after health struggles. At her memorial service, those who took to the podium spoke highly about the late actress. Some like actress Lerato Mvelase also spoke about the struggles faced by creatives in the country. She is not happy with how some production house take them for granted, treating them like they are not human beings. The award winning actress called out the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, for not neglecting the grievances of artists. She the boldly said that artists will no longer allow the department to come and celebrate with them.

When Mam Nandi’s struggles became public, Gayton McKenzie is among those who responded. The Minister of Arts, Sports and Culture used his own personal finances, to help Mam Nandi, and also vowed to assist her some more. Sadly, after her passing, there has been news doing the rounds that he did not honor his promise.

Well, the Minister has taken to social media to clear his name. He states that he gave the late R20k, after hearing of her situation. Then after her passing, he flew to Cape Town, to see her children. After which, McKenzie made arrangement for Mam Nandi’s body to be mover to a mortuary that will bury her. On top of that he donated another R10k for refreshments, and provided a driver, who will be running around with the family. The Ministry, is also taking care of the whole funeral.
