He was part of the cabinet that resigned when Former President Thabo Mbeki resigned as President of South Africa. He is also part of the ANC member’s that left the party to form the Congress of the Party. Lekota is currently the leader of COPE. Here are top 10 things you don’t know about him.
1) His real name is Mosiuoa Gerard Patrick Lekota. His nickname Terror Lekota comes from his playing style on the soccer field.
2) He was born in Kroonstad.
3) He matriculated at St. Francis College in Mariannhill in 1969. Although he enrolled for a social science degree at the University of the North, he was expelled due to his student Representative Council – and Black Consciousness Movement – aligned South African Student Organization (SASA) activities in 1972.
4) Lekota became a permanent organizer for SASO in 1974, but was imprisoned at Robben Island Prison for “Conspiring to commit acts endangering the maintenance of law and order” during the same year. He had organized victory rallies to celebrate the independence of Mozambique.
5) He was released from prison in 1982.
6) Right after his release, he was elected as publicity secretary of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983.
7) On 14 October, the ANC suspended both Lekota’s and Mluleki George’s memberships. After a further bout of legal squabbling with the ANC, it was decided that the new party be named the Congress of the People (COPE).
8) Lekota is married to Cynthia who is a former teacher in the Free-Sate. They have two children, one daughter and one son.
9) He is fluent in English, Afrikaans, Tswana, Sotho, Xhosa and Zulu.
