Leleti Khumalo Bags An Honorary Doctorate From A Top University. We have a new Dr, and it is none other than Leleti Khumalo. The multi-award winning actor is receiving her Honorary Doctorate (LLD) today, Wednesday 25th March 2026.
The multi award winning actress has been honored with a Honorary Doctorate (LLD) from Rhodes University. This is in recognition of her profound contribution to South African theatre, film and television, and for her enduring role in using storytelling to illuminate the social realities of the country. Across more than three decades, her performances have brought global attention to South African history, identity and resilience.
Rhodes University has shared that they are honored to recognition Mam’ Khumalo’s remarkable contribution to the arts and to South African cultural life. Her body of work stands as a testament to the role of storytelling in shaping public consciousness and preserving the memory of a nation

From the defiant spirit of Sarafina! to the poignant storytelling in Yesterday, Leleti has used her craft as a powerful tool for social change, confronting the realities of Apartheid and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She doesn’t just act; she advocates,” the university shared.
The legendary Mam’ Khumalo’s artistic journey began in community theatre. She then rose to international prominence through her iconic role as Sarafina in the anti-apartheid
musical Sarafina!. Her performance in the Broadway production of Sarafina! earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.
She also bagged a lead role in the film Yesterday in 2004). The film, which tells the story of a rural woman living with HIV/AIDS, brought global attention to the human impact of the epidemic. Mam Khumalo also stood out in productions such as Hotel Rwanda, Invictus, Generations, Uzalo, Imbewu and Muvhango.
