Army To Be Deployed To Restore Peace And Security

Helen Zille has written a plea to the president Jacob Zuma for army to be deployed into gang areas in the province, The Cape Argus reported.

The Herald also reported that soldiers would be sent to gang hotspots in the Eastern Cape city.

The PE newspaper said it had seen a national order sent by National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure chairperson Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela to both the provinces police commissioners instructing them to form a committee to deal with the gang crisis.

According to News24 Zille had apparently met on the gang problem, and she also told the President that the situation has reached crisis levels and that “we can not afford undue delays if we are to prevent the further loss of innocent lives.”

The South African National Defence Force will be sent to parts of the Cape Flats to restore peace and security to the conflict-ridden areas, and the focus will be on “stability operations” like roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints, enhanced crime prevention and support for police officers.
