A lot of people have lost families, friendships, jobs, business deals and so many other things after coming out about their sexuality. Thishiwe, who now wants to be referred to using they/ them pronouns instead of she/her has shared how their father reacted when they tried to disclose their sexual orientation. The award actor winning film director and writer says after attempting to come out, their father told the to shut up and he passed them a drink. Thishiwe’s father was well aware the they are a lesbian, ad assured them that he likes them and their girlfriend.

Gushing over their dad, Thishiwe added that he is a Zulu ma who went up to Grade 5, but now is the most powerful entrepreneur they know. Addressing other people, Thishiwe finds no excuse for them to be homophobic regardless of their background.

I never had to educate my father on nothing,” Thishiwe said.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community Thishiwe was in a widely publicized relationship with Mandisa Nduna. The two were one of Mzansi’s favorite celeb power couples, and were crowned the Cutest Couple of the year at the ninth annual Feather Awards. However, in October 2020, Thishiwe and Mandisa, took to Twitter to announce that after dating for almost four years, they have called it quits.

The relationship of the two award winning actresses, has been an inspiration for people in and out of the LGBT community. The have been featured on major magazines, have bagged TV and radio interviews among other things. From both their breakup statements, the two exes did not harbor bitter feelings towards each other. In fact, they celebrated the love they have shared over the years, and thanked everyone who supported them while they were still a couple.
