Basetsana Kumalo Remembers Nelson Mandela 10 Years After His Passing

Basetsana Kumalo Remembers Nelson Mandela 10 Years After His Passing. On this day 10 years ago, the nation lost it’s first democratic president. The iconic Nelson Rolihlahla Madiba Mandela died on December 5, 2013, in Johannesburg. He was 95 years old.

After his death was announced, his life was remembered and celebrated in South Africa as well as around the world. Numerous memorial services were held, including one by the South African government on December 10. He was laid to rest at Qunu, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, on December 15, with the likes of former US President Barack Obama in attendance.

Mandela was close to many public figures, one of them, Basetsana Kumalo. The former beauty queen was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994, the same year Mandela was elected president. The two had such a great bond, attending major events and just spending quality time together. In Kumalo’s memoir, Bassie: My Journey of Hope, she opened up about the importance of mentorship in business and gave Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel credit for contributing to her success.

Today, as many remember Mandela, Basetsana was not left behind. She shared a picture in which she is posing with Mandela, and gave it a cool caption.

…10 years today. In loving memory ♥️♥️♥️,” Basetsana said.
