The Casual Merchandiser opportunity at Dis-Chem East Rand provides candidates with an opportunity to gain or strengthen practical experience in retail merchandising and customer service. The role covers much more than keeping shelves stocked, as the successful candidate will also help manage product presentation, stock rotation, stocktaking, housekeeping and customer queries. This makes the position suitable for someone who is comfortable with practical store work and enjoys contributing to a well-organised shopping environment.

Stock control will be one of the most important areas of responsibility. The Casual Merchandiser must ensure that products are available, correctly rotated and monitored for expiry dates, while low stock, damaged merchandise and out-of-stock items must be reported to management. Accurate handling of stock can help reduce losses and ensure that customers can find the products they need.

Merchandising standards will also be central to the role. The successful candidate will need to follow Dis-Chem store layouts and planograms while ensuring shelves, displays, labels and pricing remain neat, visible and accurate. Keeping displays well stocked and properly faced up can support a better customer experience while helping the store maximise sales opportunities.

Customer service remains an important part of the position because the Casual Merchandiser will interact directly with shoppers. Customers should receive friendly, helpful and courteous assistance, while out-of-stock queries and other stock-related concerns must be followed up and resolved appropriately. Candidates should therefore be comfortable communicating with customers while maintaining a professional and positive attitude.

The position also includes physically demanding responsibilities such as loading and off-loading stock, moving boxes and assisting with stockroom activities. Candidates must be physically fit enough to perform these tasks safely and should be able to follow health and safety requirements at all times. A willingness to assist with different store responsibilities will be valuable in a busy retail environment.

The Dis-Chem strategic talent pool is intended to provide the organisation with a readily available group of candidates who may be considered for suitable future positions. Being included in the talent pool does not guarantee that a candidate will be hired by Dis-Chem Pharmacies, but it may increase the likelihood of being considered when a suitable vacancy becomes available and matches the candidate’s qualifications and the company’s business needs.

Applicants should meet the essential requirements before applying, including Grade 12, up to six months of retail experience, computer literacy and the ability to work retail hours. Candidates with more extensive retail experience, FMCG knowledge, merchandising experience, product knowledge or the ability to analyse ZMORE reports may have an advantage. Strong English communication, good time management, honesty and reliability will also be important qualities for the role.

The Casual Merchandiser opportunity is based in the East Rand, Boksburg, Gauteng, within the Retail division of Dis-Chem Pharmacies. The position is part-time and offers a market-related salary.
