6 winning strategies for casino games

Gambling is big business. While casino games like poker, blackjack and roulette still evoke hazy images of Vegas glitz and glam, today they’re enjoyed by millions of players across the world. The market will soon be worth a staggering $94 billion – so gambling is well and truly here to stay.

Many classic casino games are won by a combination of luck and strategy. While there’s nothing you can do about the former, there’s a lot you can do about the latter. Find out more about the best approaches to casino games and put yourself in contention for a jackpot the next time you hit the tables.

Tip 1: Play Roulette

Roulette is the quintessential casino game. There are a variety of different strategies that players of roulette use to try and get an edge over the house and increase their chances of winning. The top two of these strategies are the Martingale and D’Alembert systems.

The Martingale strategy is the most popular. The idea behind it is to increase your bets after every consecutive loss — and when you win, return to betting the original amount. The Martingale method allows you to increase your chances of winning over the short term through betting big to win small. It does have some disadvantages too: your wins will be small. And your losses, while infrequent, will be much bigger when they inevitably come around.

The Martingale is ideal for low stakes roulette, suiting the more cautious gamers out there. If you want to get a feel for how this strategy works, it’s a good idea to get some practice in online first. There’s no shortage of online casinos out there – but you’ll get a satisfying playing experience while putting the strategy to the test by visiting one of the most highly regarded online casino operators and playing low stakes roulette.

The D’Alembert strategy is a relatively safe system to play. Like the Martingale system, players increase their bets after a loss, but at a smaller rate. Players pick a starting bet and increase their bets by one after a loss, and decrease them by one after a win. As the theory goes, once you have as many wins as losses, you will be in profit. Of course, being that it’s a low-risk strategy, the potential winnings of the D’Alembert system are low.

Tip 2: Play one on one with the dealer

Of course, the house always has an edge. But should you find yourself playing one on one with a dealer at a table, this edge is reduced. The casino has a greater advantage in games with numerous players. You’re less likely to see volatility in the cards you get if you’re playing one on one — and your chances of getting high value cards drastically decline if you’re playing against more people.

If a casino manager sees a patron playing one on one, they may shut down a few tables to try and get more players in one game, or even send over some house players to fill up the table you’re at. It’s pretty standard with casinos, so if you happen to find yourself in the lucky position of playing one on one, don’t expect it to last.

Tip 3: Slow down your time at the slots

Slots are incredibly fun to play. And they’ve been enjoyed by players now for centuries — the first slot machine was invented in 1895 in California and they’ve only grown in popularity (and quality) since.

But slot machines also have some of the highest house edges in a casino. And they can be played fast — in some cases up to 300 spins in an hour.

Unlike poker, slots are entirely about luck. You press a button, the reels spin, and you either win or you don’t. But a great strategy to make sure you’re not losing all in one go – and thereby diminishing your fun (and time) at the machine – is by slowing down your time of play at the slot machines. Do you usually hit the 300 spins an hour mark? Try bringing that time down to 100, or even 50! Your bank roll will last three times – or more – as long as before, and you’ll be able to savour the experience and soak up all the fun you can have while playing slots.

Tip 4: Play in tournaments

Many professional players will tell you that a great strategy for making some cash on casino games is to play in tournaments. Tournaments give players the opportunity to invest a set amount of money while still having the opportunity to walk away with some very impressive, big prizes

The strategy is simple: you pay your entry fee and if you play well enough, you’ll win the money (often worth much more than the flat entry fee) and extend your bankroll for future tournaments and games. Of course, this requires a larger investment at the start, but the opportunities to win are so much bigger in the long run. And the ability to plan your buy-in ahead of time reduces your gambling to a predictable wager. Also, tournaments are an exciting and fun atmosphere — the big event-style of play really adds to your gambling experience and the quality of your fun.

Tip 5: Bluff less

There’s a lot of misconceptions around bluffing. Films, TV and even live games on television have make it seem like players are bluffing all the time — and that it’s one of the best strategies for big wins when it comes to winning. In reality, professional pokers bluff a lot less than you think they do; and your own strategy when playing should follow suit.

No matter how much you currently bluff, try cutting that time in half and see how you can benefit from it. Curtailing the amount of time you’re bluffing means that that when you do bluff, other players won’t be able to see it coming — making the tactic more effective overall with the potential to result in some big wins while playing.

Tip 6: The most important strategy: have fun!

At the end of the day, playing casino games is all about having fun. If you keep the entertainment value of gameplay at the centre of your experience, you’ll be less likely to suffer the big losses of those that continue playing more than they can afford to risk. Having fun is what casino games are made for, after all.
