Fear of driving can lead you to abandon driving completely. However, by following simple steps, you can help yourself overcome a fear of driving. Whether you are frightened by driving as a whole or on highways, over bridges or at night, you can overcome your fears and remain relaxed behind the wheel.

Pinpoint what is causing your anxiety. Are you new to driving? Were you recently in a car accident? Do you simply not trust your driving skills? Once you have figured out the root of your worry, seek help that can help your way of thinking. If it’s emotional scars, consider getting help from a therapist.

 Get in your car and get comfortable. Adjust the seat, mirrors and anything else that may make you uneasy. Being comfortable is very important in overcoming the fear of driving. Once you are relaxed behind the wheel, even if the car is off, that’s a step in the right direction.

Ask a friend to join you in your car. To do things together is usually less scary than to do them by yourself. Many people have a fear of driving alone. Ask a friend or family member to accompany you while you drive. That way you’ll build up your confidence and experience less fear. Anything you can do to cut the tension is good when overcoming the fear of driving.

Take deep breaths. If you’re ever driving and start to experience one of the many symptoms of your phobia (sweating, stomach aches, nausea), take a few deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. Deep breaths steady the heart beat and help you to relax.

Always remember that you can overcome your driving phobia. Take the first step and make a firm decision to get over your fears and start on a new road.
